Humidity is the whole story here. Wilmington spends most of the year damp, and damp turns a missed corner into a problem rather than just a smudge — shower grout shadows, window tracks stay wet, baseboards on the shaded side of the house go chalky, and anything left in a closed-up beach house grows a smell by August.
Then there's what gets carried in. Sand in slider tracks and entry mats. Salt film on glass and hardware near the water. Pine pollen from late March into May, and the fine grit that comes in behind a storm. None of it is dramatic on any given day; all of it compounds.
